Norovbanzad Vinyl

#BS_Case:
A legend of Mongolian traditional long singing, Namjilyn Norovbanzad’s legacy lives on in our hearts. Commissioned by her children and grandchildren, the Brainstorm team was tasked to create a cover design for Norovbanzad’s new vinyl “Under the Sun of a Placid World” (“Уяхан Замбуу Тивийн Наран”) featuring a collection of her greatest songs.

#BS_Challenge:

To create a vinyl cover design that communicates the legacy and the art of Namjilyn Norovbanzad. To illustrate the vinyl title “Under the Sun of a Placid World'' through visual design.

#BS_Solution:

Because the contents of the vinyl have much weight and substance, we aimed to keep the cover design as simple as possible. Using a printmaking technique known as Intaglio, we created an illustration of Norovbanzad. As this technique is most famously used to illustrate historical figures in paper bills, we used this technique to highlight the long-lived legacy of Norovbanzad and her art.

By choosing bright, yet muted colors for the background, we aimed to portray the serenity, beauty and vastness of Mongolian landscapes. The bright orange sun shining through a deep blue sky embodies the vinyl’s title. The sun is centered around our singer’s head like a halo, symbolizing the saint-like resonance Norovbanzad has in our hearts.

Dressed in traditional Mongolian attire, Norovbanzad has an image of the Milky Way galaxy placed on her chest and hat. Mongolian traditional long-singing is vast, powerful and expansive, like the geographic landscape it was born out of. We used an image of infinite night skies to demonstrate the strength of this art. By placing the Milky Way near her chest, we honor Norovbanzad’s motherhood and the benevolence she has gifted to her descendants.

Simple and serene, imbued with symbolism, soul and traditional Mongolian imagery, Namjilyn Norovbanzad’s vinyl cover design is one of our proudest works. Each element of the design has a story. A story about the vast quietude of Mongolian steppes and a voice that permeates and rings through.
